In Peru, more than half a million children under the age of 5 are malnourished. 25% of the population live in poverty, and yet, the thing they want most is to have a Bible of their own.
That’s why the Peruvian Bible Society began the “Pan de Vida” project, or as we might know it, the “Bread of Life” project. This project has been running for over 20 years and has already helped thousands of children across Peru.
Bible Society NI have supported this vital project for many years because of the support we receive from people like you. However, there is still a great need for this project. Will you support these children today?
This year, the “Bread of Life” project is running in 38 different locations around Peru, which is only possible due to the partnerships formed with local churches and volunteers. Every week, teachers share the Bible lessons with over 1,415 children whilst providing a nutritious breakfast or snack. The children are also provided with an age-appropriate Bible for them to take home and read.
Your prayerful and financial support today will help more low-income children in Peru to combat the effects of malnutrition whilst learning about the God who loves them unconditionally.
The “Bread of Life” project is committed to addressing two of the children’s fundamental needs.
+ Physically, it is about improving children’s nutrition, which helps to reduce childhood illnesses and increase their learning potential. This is done through the provision of nutritious breakfasts.
+ Spiritually, they long for children to find a relationship with God in the person of Jesus through the sharing of Bible stories and age-appropriate Bible engagement materials.
Bringing the “Bread of Life” to the Shipibo communities.
One of the indigenous groups most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru were the Shipibo people. This is what motivated the Peruvian Bible Society to extend the “Bread of Life” project into the Shipibo communities for the first time. These communities are located along the banks of the Ucayali River in the jungle, which brings its own challenges.
One of the Shipibo communities the team are serving is Caimito, where they met Lenny. He said, “I really like going to church to learn about God. I also wanted to have a book like the teacher. God answered my prayer because Bread of Life came to Caimito and now my friends and I have the Bible and colouring books with stories. We are very happy! After studying the Bible, we prayed with our teacher and enjoyed breakfast, which was prepared by the sisters of the church. It’s delicious. I realise that God’s love is great, and he loves the children of Caimito”.
In Santa Isabel, another Shipibo community, they met 8-year-old Angie who said, “I’m happy because through books I learn that God loves me and cares for me.”
Whilst this project has run for many years, it still requires the generosity of people like you to provide the much-needed funds to continue serving the children of Peru in this way.
Your support today can directly help to nourish children just like Lenny and Angie, both spiritually and physically, over the coming year.
