Illiteracy is a big issue in Peru, especially in the rural areas of the country and particularly among women. Traditionally families prioritise the education of boys over girls, and so women grow up without the skills of reading and writing. Since 2005 the Peruvian Bible Society has been tackling this issue. By establishing Bible-based literacy classes in the Quechua language men, women and children are learning how to read and write in their heart language.
